The Challenge
We initiated an internal design exploration aimed at redefining the premium bicycle lighting segment. Hardware startups often need to minimise early-stage commercial risk before committing significant capital to hardware engineering. Acting as our own client for this speculative project, we challenged ourselves to establish a solid aesthetic, ergonomic, and strategic foundation for a highly intuitive bike light set that could theoretically be engineered for manufacturing and market entry.
The conceptual product needed to meet strict StVZO certification standards while solving common commuter pain points identified in our initial problem analysis: cumbersome attachment methods, cognitive friction during operation, and the universal frustration of losing loose accessories at the bottom of a backpack. The core challenge lay in delivering a validated design concept where every touchpoint, from the initial unboxing to daily urban riding, felt intentional, durable, and effortlessly simple.

The Solution
We approached this self-initiated project exactly as we would a client collaboration, kicking off with our standard Project Exploration Session assessment to evaluate the project's complexity and estimate a development roadmap. From there, we moved through our workflow, beginning with a deep dive into the user context to map out the complete physical journey, from retrieving the lights to charging and storing them.
We translated these insights into a strict design requirements specification and a clear design strategy. Following an ideation review of our early sketches, we developed a basic CMF (colour, material, finish) specification to solve the portability challenge. We designed a custom stainless steel case that securely holds both lights, paired with a refined leather handle. Ingeniously, when the lights are docked inside this holder, the entire assembly functions seamlessly as a traditional, handheld flashlight. For the lights themselves, the CMF specified a robust Polycarbonate housing with an acrylic glass window for optimal light transmission.
Our design rationale focused heavily on cognitive ergonomics to eliminate user friction. The housing area surrounding the front light's window is colored white to intuitively signal its purpose, while the corresponding area on the rear light is red. This immediate visual cue is further reinforced by the interface: the front light features a black button, and the rear light a red one. To meet safety requirements, the front light incorporates a dedicated ring near the output source, allowing light to bleed through for crucial side visibility.
To maintain a sleek silhouette, we conceptualised a quick-lock precision system. Our design strategy keeps the attaching mechanism hidden entirely within the main body when not in use. When a small door is opened manually, a spring elegantly deploys the lock outward, featuring conceptualised anti-slippage rubber pads to ensure the light never twists accidentally during a bumpy ride.
We concluded the project with a comprehensive concept presentation, showcasing initial 3D renders. Because this conceptual stage is exactly when founders typically prepare for investor pitches, we also applied several strategic upsell deliverables to the case study: early unit cost forecasting, a basic IP strategy to protect the hidden locking mechanism, and a high-fidelity look-and-feel prototype.
The outcome is a validated design concept that demonstrates how establishing this rigorous groundwork minimises commercial risk, securing early IP confidence before paying for full production engineering upfront.
